I haven't listened to Neon Bible since like March and don't really have a desire to. For me, the songs are dull, the production is too clean, too exact, too stiff. The lyrics are pretty bad and the emotional buildups of songs either feel contrived or just aren't there. I honestly hate Black Mirror and Black Wave/Bad Vibrations; I think they're the worst songs the band has ever done. I really think Intervention and Antichrist TV are the only songs that come close to Funeral, and of course No Cars Go, but I mean, it's been done.

Look, I really love the band. Funeral is still one of my favorite albums EVER. The ep, all their demo stuff, most everything by them is really amazing. I will always see them live when I get the chance, as they are still in my mind one of the most exciting bands around.

But there's a reason why almost none of the Neon Bible songs work live, where EVERYTHING off Funeral is just unreal. I like the raw and kind of naive passion and energy of Funeral and all the early recordings (plus Win's voice is higher in them). For me, that kind of spontaneous, confused, and kinda crazy ball of fun is the Arcade Fire I love, and I was disappointed in that image being sort of cast aside for this blunt and uninteresting semi political statement record.
